Day Five

“It would help to not have so many items crowding around the front area of the shop,” said Buttons, entering the bookstore. He seemed to be walking almost tip-toe style, his tail pointed confidently in the air as though he had no care in the world.

“Thank you for that insight, Buttons,” Dorothy replied. “That would definitely be Janie’s job. Unless you’d like to pitch in.”

“No, thank you. I would rather like to continue my routine napping in the office next to your bookends,” Buttons hissed. “And plus, the common folk would not understand seeing a cat moving things with his mind. They’d have to go through months of therapy, if not years.”

“You’re right,” Dorothy responded, rolling her eyes. Buttons had not picked up on her humor. “You’re not getting paid anyway, but with meals, room, and board. Helping out would be too much for you.”

Buttons looked up at her with what seemed to be a kitty grin, and closed one eye as if to wink in appreciation.“I’m so glad you understand my point of view, Dorothy.”

The morning sunlight streamed through the large front windows of the bookstore. Dorothy tidied shelves as customers slowly trickled in. The aroma of Tyler's baking wafted from the kitchen, drawing curious patrons.

In the kitchen, Tyler carefully removed a tray of scones from the oven. "Wonderful batch today," Dorothy said, popping in to check.

Tyler beamed. "Thanks! The new recipe is a hit so far." He began plating the still piping-hot scones.

Dorothy turned back to the shelves as the bells above the door chimed once more. A group of regular customers had arrived, no doubt drawn in by the fresh aromas wafting from the kitchen.

She smiled as Mr. Johnson shuffled inside, removing his hat to reveal his wispy white hair. "Morning, George, what can I help you find today?"

"Mornin' Dorothy. That new FDR bio you got in, think I'll have a look at it," he replied in his quiet, creaky voice.

Dorothy led him to the history section and plucked the requested book from the shelf. As she handed it over, she said "Why don't you grab a scone and coffee too? They just came out of the oven."

Mr. Johnson's eyes lit up. "Don't mind if I do!"

She watched the elderly man settle into a cozy armchair, already lost in the book's opening pages, as he nibbled his scone. Dorothy hoped he would linger for a while — it did her heart good to see the regulars finding comfort within the bookstore's walls.

Dorothy checked on Tyler again. "Sales look good," she observed.

"Indeed. Though Janie stopped by earlier without saying much," he said. "I think she was checking up on me."

Dorothy smiled gently. "Just focus on your work. In time, things will smooth over." She noticed the book in his hands. "How are you finding that one?"

Tyler grinned. "Fascinating so far."

The morning rush began to taper off as noon approached. Dorothy took a moment to restock some shelves that had been emptied by curious patrons. She hummed softly to herself as she worked.
